The Standard Bearer

Old Fashioned

An old fashioned with bourbon, bitters, and orange

The old fashioned is the cocktail other cocktails are measured against: spirit, sugar, bitters, ice, orange. It predates the word “cocktail” meaning anything else, and it survives because there’s nowhere to hide — every choice shows.

How we build it

Bourbon with backbone, a quarter ounce of demerara syrup, two kinds of bitters, and a stir measured in seconds rather than vibes — over-dilution is how good old fashioneds die. One large clear cube carved in-house, because a slow melt is part of the recipe, and an orange peel expressed over the surface so the first thing you meet is oil, not alcohol.

Why our way is best

The flyer says it plainly: spirit forward, orange, rich. We take each word as a contract. No muddled fruit salad, no soda splash, no shortcuts on the ice. A drink this old has already survived every improvement anyone tried; our job is to build it correctly and get out of the way.
